The Duct Sealing Project

In forced air heating and air conditioning, HVAC ducts are used to distribute the conditioned air to living spaces. These ducts are very leaky. In California, in forced air systems over 20 percent of all residential HVAC in both heating and cooling is wasted through leakage of air from ducts. There are several means to mitigate this leakage. Most of them require access to the ducts from the outside, while others require expensive and complicated equipment. All the techniques in use today are time consuming and expensive.

The Davis Collaborative has submitted a research project to the California Energy Commission to develop a low cost, easily applied duct sealant technique that can be used by technicians with a minimum of training. The workplan of this proposal is available here.
